The History of the Snowmobile
Snowmobiles in Lapland are not just used for tourism but are widely used around Lapland by the locals to help them herd their Reindeer and to get around. Snowmobiling is relatively common and if you go back in history you will find other models that were made to travel over snow. Wisconsinites dabbled and experimented with snow travel before the 1900s with a kind of bike with ski's attached. Snowmobiles were much larger vehicles, such as the T model which were used in the army. Individual one person snowmobiling didn't really come into force until the 1950s when Polaris Industries were amongst the first snowmobile manufacturers to build a modern practical snowmobile. Although these models were practical, their speed was limited because of the sheer weight of the vehicles and their speed was limited to about 20m.p.h. Bombardier was the next to invent a practical more modern and lighter snowmobile. Around this time components such as the engine became small and lighter enabling the machines to be considerably lighter. This was the time when Bombardier was able to invent and build a modern two seater, open-cockpit snowmobile. The model was called the ski-doo which is still one of the most popular models in existence today.
Generally the snowmobiles today are designed for travelling across open pathways where there is not particularly deep snow and models such as the ski-doo are still quite heavy machines. Snowmobiles are also designed for travelling at some speed over frozen lakes and snow and in some places snowmobile races and competitions are held that involve the snowmobiles travelling over grass, pavement and hard ground. Children's snowmobiles are also in existence and can be found as part of the activity schedules in Lapland where the children get the chance to experience the snowmobiles where the speed is restricted, meaning they can have fun as well as remaining safe.
