The History of the Snowmobile

!±8± The History of the Snowmobile

Snowmobiles in Lapland are not just used for tourism but are widely used around Lapland by the locals to help them herd their Reindeer and to get around. Snowmobile trips and excursions are very popular, not least by lots of holidaymakers wanting to experience them for the first time. There is the opportunity to go on an organised trip or hire a snowmobile and get out there on your own. There are local activity centres where you can hire a snowmobile and take a map and with over 300km snowmobile tracks in and around Yllas, you certainly will have lots of space to travel in.

Snowmobiling is relatively common and if you go back in history you will find other models that were made to travel over snow. The truth is that man actually mastered the art of flying before it mastered the art of snow travel. Wisconsinites dabbled and experimented with snow travel before the 1900s with a kind of bike with ski's attached. Snowmobiles were much larger vehicles, such as the T model which were used in the army. Individual one person snowmobiling didn't really come into force until the 1950s when Polaris Industries were amongst the first snowmobile manufacturers to build a modern practical snowmobile. Although these models were practical, their speed was limited because of the sheer weight of the vehicles and their speed was limited to about 20m.p.h. Bombardier was the next to invent a practical more modern and lighter snowmobile. Around this time components such as the engine became small and lighter enabling the machines to be considerably lighter. This was the time when Bombardier was able to invent and build a modern two seater, open-cockpit snowmobile. The model was called the ski-doo which is still one of the most popular models in existence today.

Generally the snowmobiles today are designed for travelling across open pathways where there is not particularly deep snow and models such as the ski-doo are still quite heavy machines. Snowmobiles are also designed for travelling at some speed over frozen lakes and snow and in some places snowmobile races and competitions are held that involve the snowmobiles travelling over grass, pavement and hard ground. Children's snowmobiles are also in existence and can be found as part of the activity schedules in Lapland where the children get the chance to experience the snowmobiles where the speed is restricted, meaning they can have fun as well as remaining safe.

Polaris Snowmobile

!±8± Polaris Snowmobile

Most people who own a Polaris snowmobile will use it on rough, tough and rugged terrain. Frequent use of the snowmobile on snow, slush and any other type of terrain guarantees then the ATV has to be serviced often. To keep it running in good condition, you may have to often replace some parts. Many times we are tempted to go with the cheaper and more generic option, but with these vehicles, it is important to go with genuine Polaris parts.

The first step in maintenance of your ATV is to find an authorized Polaris snowmobile dealer in your area. You can search for them in the yellow pages or on the internet. You also need to know the year and model of your ATV. Thoroughly knowing the workings of your ATV will help you pin point a problem if one does arise. This way, when you need to replace a part, you know what exactly you need to buy.

Once you have established these things, you go to the dealership with the name of the part and the serial number. If they are not available in store, there are many authorized dealers who have these parts listed on the internet. Auction sites like eBay also list new and slightly used Polaris snowmobile parts. For example if looking for a hood bib, you can find the price for a new or used one.

Remember to always look for parts that are compatible with your ATV. Be wary of dealers who sell fake parts. Make sure you establish that they are affiliated to Polaris. Real dealers with also carry other accessories like snowmobile skis, seats , FLY double pivot post adapter and reverse gears all made by Polaris.
